Archery: 4th - 6th Grade
During the curriculum rewrite several years ago (I might have still been in college) our district wide Physical Education program decided to change and add some pieces to the curriculum that would support lifelong activities. The pieces that were added were bowling, inline skating, and archery.
We went through "National Archery in our Schools" and have accumulated a set of Genesis Original bows.

What will my child learn in archery?
Every grade, 4th through 6th, receives all of the safety and technique information throughout the unit. We start with making string bows, which is exactly what it sounds like. This is a good way to practice where your draw length should be, your finger placement on your draw, and your follow-through after release.
We then incorporate the string bows into the whistle commands, how the students know when to: get bow, take a stance on the shooting line, draw and shoot, retrieve arrows. We go through this with our string bows several times before they get to use the Genesis bows.
I love how our students put a lot of effort into their maturity during this unit. It makes me able to incorporate activities that tie along with their skills, that will make the unit more fun.
Below is a list of activities the 4th and 5th graders will be doing:
-Shoot for shapes
-Shoot for balloons
-Tic- Tac- Toe
-Partner Copy
-Pick a color
-Scoring
Our 6th graders will have a cross-curricular aspect to theirs as we partner with Mrs. Suszka in the library. She is always excited to set up her activities for the students. We are playing off PARTS of the book Hunger Games. The students/tributes will be in districts and will be working together to accumulate enough points to "live" for the following day in the arena. They will be able to earn "points" for homework being complete, no late work, no late library books, and the points they gain in class from their shooting.
These points equate to water, shelter, food, clothing, and tools which are needed to survive in the arena. Each day in the arena will cost them some of these points for using these things to participate. They may also lose "points' through misbehavior, late-work, or shooting traps on the target which will be a surprise to the tribute. Tributes may also get a sponsor in the school, perhaps a staff member thinks they are doing a nice job and would like to send a silver parachute with points.
This unit will include math, social studies, literature, and physical education. Science may also be snuck into this unit.

After day 2 in the arena, most Districts find themselves struggling
Things took a drastic turn after day 2 in the arena. Many tributes simply ran out of the very things that they need to survive; water, food, protection, and their tool. They again faced the same dangers as their first day in, but Dora was no longer there to help them increase their supply. Tributes gained their much needed points through an intense game of archery tic-tac-toe. Some walked away with less than they came with, some had to use their gains to pay back their previous debt. If anyone was lucky enough to catch one of the Avengers, they received a days worth of supplies.
Tributes are looking forward to a visit to the Cornucopia later this week to hopefully regain their health and strength.
Below are the District's scores after day 2 in this challenging arena. The Capital is abuzz with concern for those struggling tributes.

Tributes are hanging on after their first day in the arena
First day of the games proved how important training was. Some districts entered the arena with the skills to find their bow, water, food, and shelter. Other tributes found some dangers; whether from rabid animals, poisonous spiders, or sunburn- no one was safe. Surprisingly, some tributes found some help along the way by Dora the Explorer- she is always prepared with her backpack of supplies. This gave the tributes enough to make it another day in the arena.
Below are the training scores that will again, keep the Capital entertained!

Day 3 Training- Complete
- Get some rest, the games start Monday!
Tributes have been working hard to earn as high of a training score possible during their sessions. They are evaluated on form and accuracy. Some tributes look like they may struggle in the arena with not enough points to trade for the essentials; water, food, shelter, and their tool. They should be hoping their sponsor can gather enough points in their district to send a little help.
Below are the training scores that will surely get the Capital riled up for another exciting Trailside Games!
